Rep. Roy’s statement on voting against bill that would help Democrats raise the debt ceiling
WASHINGTON—Rep. Chip Roy (TX-21) issued the following statement after voting against S.610 Tuesday, which would pave the way for Democrats to raise the debt ceiling and undermine the Senate filibuster:
Last night, I voted against legislation that would delay impending cuts to Medicare. Congress should fulfill its responsibility to providers and ensure they have the needed resources to provide care for Americans — especially as the medical field faces a dire, albeit man made, staffing shortage. However, these cuts were a result of Congress's reckless spending habits. This bill once again kicks these cuts down the road while failing to address the myriad issues with Medicare, including its projected insolvency, and Congress's unacceptable inability to abide by spending limits.
Moreover, attached to this legislation was an outrageous provision that makes it easier for Democrats to raise the debt ceiling and pile more debt onto the backs of the American taxpayer. Despite pledging that Republicans would not help Democrats increase the debt limit, Leader McConnell hatched a deal with Leader Schumer that gives Democrats a "one-time" pass on the Senate filibuster rule to raise the limit. This scheme only paves the way for future bloated spending and a breakdown of the Senate filibuster firewall against radical policies.
