Rep. Roy's statement concerning his vote on national emergencies declared by the President
WASHINGTON, DC – Representative Chip Roy (R-TX-21) issued the following statement after voting for H.J. RES. 68, H.J. RES. 70, H.J. RES. 74, H.J. RES. 71, and H.J. RES. 79:
"Bad actors and organizations that threaten the security and prosperity of the United States and our closest allies like the State of Israel must be dealt with forcibly.
However, that has to be done in line with the wisdom of the Constitution. We can’t continue the practice of allowing presidents -- on both sides of the aisle -- to take unilateral emergency actions that continue for decades without adequate Congressional oversight or input. The presidency was never meant to have that kind of power; that’s why we have checks and balances. Congress must step up and ensure the executive branch does not have unchecked power to declare or perpetuate national emergencies, and I have introduced legislation to ensure just that."
Congressman Roy has also introduced legislation to reform the national emergencies act and put Congress back to its rightful place in the federal order.
