Rep. Roy's remarks on Juneteenth
WASHINGTON—On Saturday, Rep. Chip Roy (TX-21) released the following statement in honor of Juneteenth:
Today, on Juneteenth we commemorate the end of slavery in the United States when it was finally ended in Texas. We remember and celebrate all who worked, fought, died, or endured persecution in pursuit of the actual recognition of the inalienable right to live free and pursue happiness. While I unfortunately could not support the bill establishing the federal holiday, due to my disagreement with its naming in its rushed passage, the day is unequivocally worthy of universal joy or "jubilee" as the day has been known by many. May we on this day, and all days, unite around the principles and virtues enshrined in our founding which were more adequately fulfilled on Juneteenth.
