Rep. Roy's bipartisan bill supporting military and veteran families becomes law

October 26, 2022

WASHINGTON—On Monday, October 17th, President Biden signed Rep. Chip Roy’s (TX-21) bipartisan, bicameral Supporting Families of the Fallen Act (S. 2794) into law.

The Supporting Families of the Fallen Act supports military and veterans’ families across the country by increasing the maximum coverage amount available under the Servicemember Group Life Insurance (SGLI) and Veterans Group Life Insurance (VGLI) policy.

Rep. Roy had the following to say:

The bipartisan Supporting Families of the Fallen Act will help countless military families and veterans across the country; I am proud to see that President Biden has signed my bill into law. It is a privilege to serve our heroes on the House Veterans Affairs Committee, and I look forward to continuing to work on behalf of the those who have served our republic.

Keith Jordan, a servicemember in District 21 who first brought this issue to Rep. Roy’s attention, said:

"I want to thank Mr. Roy for his support to our military by leading the effort to update the one benefit no service member ever wants to use. I have seen the tremendous positive impact the SGLI can have on a family going through the darkest times imaginable.  The SGLI provides service members the peace of mind that their families will be taken care of in the event they pass while serving their country. By updating this benefit, Soldiers can perform their missions knowing their country will take of their families after they are gone."
