Rep. Roy leads legislation keeping gender ideology out of passports

February 18, 2022

WASHINGTON — On Friday, Rep. Roy (TX-21) introduced the Passport Sanity Act to prevent United States passports from being used to promote radical gender ideology.

The Passport Sanity Act would prohibit the Secretary of State from issuing a passport, passport card, or Consular Report of Birth Abroad that includes the unspecified (X) gender designation. Additionally, this legislation would require applications for these documents to include only the gender designations of male or female.

Last year, the State Department announced plans to introduce passports with an X gender marker in early 2022. This designation could be chosen by those refusing to identify as male or female.

"Radical gender ideology has no place in our government — whether in our education system or at the passport office. That's why I introduced the Passport Sanity Act to put an end this madness," Rep. Roy said of the bill. "There are only two sexes — male and female — and that's what official government documents should reflect. Passports exist to serve our national security by verifying the identity of those who exit and reenter our country; they do not exist to undermine reality."

Cosponsors of the legislation include Reps. Louie Gohmert (TX-01), Mary Miller (IL-15), Bob Good (VA-05),Lauren Boebert (CO-03), Matt Gaetz (FL-01), and Jeff Duncan (SC-03).
