Rep. Roy issues statement on vote to impeach Mayorkas
WASHINGTON, DC — Representative Chip Roy (TX-21) issued the following statement after voting to impeach Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas:
Today, I voted to impeach Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas — which my office and my staff have been pushing congressional Republicans to do for almost three years, against much misguided resistance. The case could not be more clear.
Mayorkas has brazenly ignored the laws he took an oath to carry out, which has led to the endangerment and death of American citizens and the migrants he purports to care about. He has lied to the American people on numerous occasions, including to me under oath in the House Judiciary Committee about maintaining operational control of the border. For these, and many other reasons, Mayorkas deserves impeachment. But more importantly, the American people — and defense of separation of powers and the rule of law — deserve Mayorkas to be impeached.
This has been a long time coming, and the case for doing it has been clear for years. I first called to impeach Mayorkas in July of 2021 on social media, given the already terrible state of this border crisis just six months in. After my friend Andy Biggs introduced Articles of Impeachment in August, my team and I repeated that call in detailed memos in both October 2021, March 2022, January of this year, and in an essay at National Review last July. My friend, Marjorie Taylor Greene, forced votes on similar articles this past fall, which laid down an important marker while the committees worked in regular order.
I commend Homeland Security Chairman Mark Green — as well as Speaker Johnson and Whip Emmer — for this important historic demonstration of the power of the U.S. House to hold an out-of-control and lawless executive branch accountable. I hope the Impeachment Managers will present the best possible case to the American people in their presentation to the Senate.
