Rep. Roy issues statement on the passing of Rep. Ron Wright

February 8, 2021

WASHINGTON — Rep. Chip Roy (TX-21) issued the following statement Monday morning in response to the passing of his friend and colleague, Rep. Ron Wright (TX-6):

Today I am deeply saddened by the loss of a good man and one of my closest friends in Congress, Ron Wright. We would all have been served well by having him for a longer time walking among us, sharing his wisdom, humor, knowledge of history, experience on Capitol Hill, and his commitment to public service. Ron believed in the greatness of America and loved our shared home state of Texas deeply.

But much more than that, Ron loved his family. He spoke of his wife, children, and grandchildren with the pride of true love and devotion. I was privileged to visit with Ron in his home a few times over these past months when he was so courageously battling cancer. As a cancer survivor, I could compare notes with him on whatever was helpful. He was upbeat always -- never looking down but forward, and he was battling it so well, defeating the odds for a long time.

The last text I got from Ron was just over a week ago. He said "Still in hospital, but definitely improving. Praying for your family!!!" This was because my family had a positive test amongst us, and he was constantly asking how we were doing, even as his cancer-ravaged body was in a weakened state to battle the virus. That is who he was: caring for others to the very last.

I rest easy knowing he loves Jesus, and that his beautiful wife, Susan, and the rest of his family know that with that love and faith comes everlasting life. They will see him again soon, holding court in heaven. For me, I will endeavor to wear a bow tie every now and then just to remember my happy and faithful friend.

God bless you, my friend. America and Texas are better for your service.
