Rep. Roy issues statement on H.R. 7024
WASHINGTON, DC — Representative Chip Roy (TX-21) issued the following statement:
On Wednesday, I voted against H.R. 7024. I have long supported many of the pro-growth tax provisions extended by this bill and believe they will incentivize investment that will create jobs, strengthen the economy, and help America compete globally.
However, I cannot support a $33 billion expansion of the Child Tax Credit when the vast majority of that expansion will take the form of cash welfare payments via refundability. Further, despite hundreds of thousands of illegal migrants pouring across our border, this bill does not address the disastrous policy Republicans erroneously, and perhaps unwittingly, supported in the past that allows illegal migrants with children born in the U.S. to claim the Child Tax Credit - in essence, funding anchor babies. There is no excuse now to claim “unwittingly,” because it is now “knowingly.”
I appreciate the work of the Ways and Means Committee on the very important pro-growth policies in this legislation and look forward to working with them to fix some of the glaring issues in our tax code and make good tax policy permanent when all of this expires after 2025.
