Rep. Roy issues statement on H.R. 5378

December 12, 2023

WASHINGTON — Rep. Chip Roy (TX-21) issued the following statement Tuesday morning:

Yesterday, I voted against H.R. 5378.

Healthcare price transparency is a laudable goal but this legislation contains billions to extend federal health programs without making key reforms to ensure these dollars are not spent in a way that violates the American people’s conscience.

While the bill is allegedly "offset," it increases the deficit by nearly $10 billion in the first five years, fueling the inflation Americans are facing right now. And the bill’s single biggest "pay-for" is an egregious budget gimmick, made possible by last year’s $1.7 trillion omnibus spending bill.

Further, this legislation was moved under suspension of the rules, barring any ability to allow amendments, or a full debate of the House.  This is not the way the People’s House should operate.

The American healthcare system needs transformative changes to bring down costs and expand healthcare freedom. This bill contained some positive provisions, but unfortunately this bill is ultimately more of the same healthcare policy that has helped lead us to the unsustainable system we see today.
