Rep. Roy Introduces No-Pay, No-Committees Term Limit Bill
Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Chip Roy (TX-21) introduced the Statutory Term Limits on Congressional Pay & Power Act to limit the incentives and institutional advantages that fuel careerism in Congress.
Beginning with the 121st Congress, once a Member of Congress reaches 12 cumulative years of service in the House of Representatives or Senate, this legislation would eliminate the Member's congressional salary and prohibit Members from serving as the chair or ranking member of any standing or select committee, or from holding a House or Senate leadership position.
"For too long, Washington has rewarded longevity with greater power, higher pay, and deeper entrenchment. If members of Congress want to serve beyond 12 years absent a constitutional amendment limiting them, they should do so without taxpayer-funded salaries and without monopolizing committee chairs and leadership positions. This bill helps ensure that public service remains exactly that: service to the people, not a lifelong career in politics,” said Rep. Roy.
