Rep. Roy Introduces the Deal Death, Face Death Act Targeting Fentanyl Dealers Who Cause Fatal Overdoses
Washington, D.C. – Today, Congressman Chip Roy (R-TX) introduced the Deal Death, Face Death Act, legislation which would allow the death penalty as punishment for those who knowingly distribute fentanyl or any drug mixed with it that results in death.
“Fentanyl is killing hundreds of Americans every single day, and the people trafficking this poison should face the harshest penalties available. If a dealer distributes fentanyl or fentanyl-laced drugs and someone dies as a result, that dealer has effectively signed that person’s death warrant. The Deal Death, Face Death Act closes a dangerous loophole and gives prosecutors the ability to pursue capital punishment against the worst offenders who are profiting off the deaths of Americans. Congress must stand with the families devastated by this crisis and send a clear message: if you deal death, you will face the full weight of justice,” said Rep. Roy.
Fentanyl and drugs laced with fentanyl kill tens of thousands of Americans each year, leaving countless families without their loved ones, creating irreparable harm for individuals and communities nationwide. Fentanyl is so deadly that two milligrams, equal to 10 to 15 grains of table salt, can kill someone.
In 2024, fentanyl poisonings killed nearly 48,000 Americans – an average of over 130 deaths a day – most of this illicit fentanyl is made by Mexican drug cartels using Chinese chemicals and smuggled across the southern border and often sold across American neighborhoods by local street gangs.
Whether trafficked across our border or made in the country, fentanyl is a scourge that has been allowed to spread to different facets of our way of life for too long, cutting individuals down in the prime of their lives. Peddlers of this poison who sell and distribute fentanyl bear the responsibility for Americans dying, often lacing fentanyl with another drug without a person knowing, and often tragically dying.
