Rep. Roy casts speaker vote for 119th Congress

January 3, 2025

WASHINGTON — Rep. Chip Roy (TX-21) issued the following statement Friday afternoon:

Today, my conservative colleagues and I voted for Mike Johnson for Speaker of the House. I did so out of support and respect for President Trump and his agenda, despite my myriad concerns about Speaker Johnson’s performance in the 118th Congress.

America is facing numerous existential crises from a wide-open southern border, to inflationary spending and crippling debt, to constrained energy production, to weakness abroad. That’s why the American people handed President Trump a historic mandate in November – because they know he can fix each and every one of these crises working with effective Republican majorities in Congress.

Now, Speaker Mike Johnson takes complete responsibility for ensuring the House delivers on every aspect of President Trump’s bold agenda without delay. That’s why, after voting for Mike Johnson for Speaker, ten of my conservative colleagues and I sent a letter to the House Republican Conference outlining our expectations for Speaker Johnson as he organizes the House in the 119th Congress and begins developing its policy agenda.

To the people of Texas-21, rest assured I will do everything in my power to ensure that this chamber delivers on the truest form of President Trump’s agenda going forward.
