Rep. Chip Roy On Trinity University Chick-fil-A Decision

May 14, 2019

WASHINGTON—Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) released the following statement regarding a letter he sent Tuesday to Trinity University commending the administration's decision to keep Chick-fil-A as a vendor in the student refectory:

Dear Danny J. Anderson,

I am writing today to thank you and the rest of the Trinity University administration for keeping Chick-fil-A as a vendor in the student refectory.

Earlier this month, I understand that the Trinity University Student Government Association requested that the administration remove Chick-fil-A from the student refectory for the company's "values regarding the LGBT+ community." While the administration is right to take the views of the student body into consideration, I commend the administration for its decision and the manner in which the administration handled the matter.

As you know, Chick-fil-A has come under fire in recent months for operating the company according to Christian values, as was the case with the San Antonio City Council's decision to ban Chick-fil-A from the San Antonio International Airport. I was thrilled to see that Trinity University, unlike the San Antonio City Council, chose to not discriminate against Chick-fil-A.

Targeting individuals, organizations, or corporations for carrying out their deeply-held religious beliefs in accord with our laws and consistent with many Americans' similarly held religious beliefs is the antithesis of championing equality and inclusion.

Thank you for ensuring that Trinity University remains a campus where all students, faculty, staff, and visitors can feel welcome and heard. By standing up for freedom of speech, you are sharpening the minds of your students and encouraging them to be the next generation of Texan leaders. I look forward to visiting with you and other university officials soon.

Sincerely,

Chip Roy

Member of Congress
