Rep. Chip Roy On Objecting To Unanimous Consent On CR Rule
Rep. Chip Roy released the following statement Tuesday evening:
Today I went down to the House floor and objected to a House Rule being adopted by unanimous consent. This Rule would have set up consideration of the continuing resolution (CR) from Friday, Nov. 22 through December 20. Why did I object? I'm tired of the people of this body carrying out these "swamp tactics."
What do I mean swamp tactics? The House was going to put forth a spending measure today—the week before Thanksgiving—in order to kick the decision to Dec. 20 (right before Christmas) to maximize pressure on members to spend money we don't have. House appropriators want to look members in the eyes and say, "you want to go see your family over Christmas? Well, then vote for this bloated spending package and hop on your flight home." They've baked the cake. They just expect us all to eat it.
The choice for funding our government for a longer interval is now easier and clearer: a long-term, modified continuing resolution, or a grotesque omnibus that busts all sense of spending sanity. It would behoove us all – and the President who is currently under attack by the swamp – to do the simplest and best thing for our nation.
Congress should fund at a sustainable level through next November, or into 2021. Furthermore, we should make sure there are no senseless limitations on the Department of Defense to do its job, or funds for other provisions that are not in line with many Americans' values, like Planned Parenthood.
The President should not give House Democrats a dollar more than our nation needs, and we should get back to reforming our government.
I believe the American People value transparency and deserve better than what Washington provides. I will fight for more real votes. To protect my vote from being abused. And to bring about real fiscal sanity and change to this country.
Today's tactic is a microcosm of everything that is wrong with Washington. Today is what Washington does. They do it purposefully and without responsibility. It is time to stop. This is the swamp in action. I objected.
