Rep. Chip Roy On House Democrats' Amendments To H.R. 550
Rep. Chip Roy released the following statement Tuesday regarding his votes on the House Democrats’ amendments to H.R. 550 – the “No War Against Iran Act” and “To repeal the Authorization for Use of Military Force Against Iraq Resolution of 2002”
After weeks of Democrats hand-wringing about President Trump’s authority to take out Iranian Gen. Qassim Suleimani, my Democratic colleagues let the American people know this afternoon that their cries were completely insincere.
Instead of having a debate on the floor about our presence in Iran, not to mention Iraq, Afghanistan, and the other nations our military operates in under an 18-year-old Authorization for Use of Military Force (AUMF), Speaker Pelosi attached two unrelated amendments to a “Gold Star Medal Act” meant to honor WWII veterans for the sole purpose of preventing legitimate debate about our presence overseas.
What Speaker Pelosi and House Democrats did today is a slap in the face to the very WWII veterans we were supposed to be honoring. Their sacrifices and legacy deserve better from Congress. It is also a slap in the face to the man or woman signing up for duty today that was not alive to see authorization of force passed in these chambers 18-years-ago. Our men and women deserve a clear mission from Congress. It is time we did our job.
