Rep. Chip Roy On His Vote On The Articles Of Impeachment Against President Donald J. Trump
Rep. Chip Roy released the following statement Wednesday regarding his vote on the articles of impeachment against President Donald J. Trump:
"Today, I voted against the articles of impeachment against President Trump.
"House Democrats have failed to provide compelling evidence of high crimes and misdemeanors meriting impeachment. What they have succeeded in doing is upending the legislative session and tearing our nation apart in their long-standing effort to remove the president, now just over 10 months until the 2020 election.
"The truth is the president had sufficient reasoning to demand that the new reformist President Zelensky would follow through on his promise to rout out corruption in a country that receives hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars in U.S. aid. In addition to the direct attack on our elections by Russia, we have direct testimony from Democrat witnesses making clear Ukraine also meddled. And we have further evidence that actions of Vice President Biden and his son raise legitimate questions regarding self-dealing and are reasonably connected to overall corruption in Ukraine.
"Finally, allegations of obstruction ignore historic questions of privilege, ongoing litigation on the matter, and the fact many executive branch witnesses testified. Democrats cannot complain about lack of participation when they created an environment that made testifying untenable.
"The American people will have the opportunity to decide in November 2020. We should let them.
"It is time for Congress to work for the American people again."
