Rep. Chip Roy On Democrats' Commitment To Putting President Trump's Border Supplemental Up For A Vote
WASHINGTON—Rep. Chip Roy (R-TX) released the following statement Wednesday regarding Democrats’ commitment to putting President Donald Trump’s border supplemental on the floor for a vote:
Today, it is obvious to anyone who has been paying attention that our recent efforts to get House Democrats to do the bare minimum to address the humanitarian crisis on our southern border are working. From conversations I had today with Democratic House leadership and appropriators, I understand that earnest negotiations are underway to bring President Donald Trump’s border supplemental request to the floor for a vote. I’m told that vote could happen within a week. My hope is this chamber takes up the supplemental and provides badly needed humanitarian relief.
While I remain skeptical we will get what is needed, I am encouraged my Democratic colleagues are finally taking the humanitarian crisis on our border seriously. We should have voted on and passed this supplemental last month after OMB Director Vought sent it to congressional leadership May 1. This supplemental is not for a border wall, but for humanitarian aid.
Furthermore, I am of the belief the chamber is better off voting than passing legislation on auto-pilot. As I said since I started requesting the “yeas” and “nays” on amendments last week, my goal was to get this body to take this crisis seriously and vote on the president’s border supplemental. Now that we are promised a vote, I will temporarily suspend demanding yeas and nays on all votes. Having said that, I will reserve the right in the future to use all procedural tools given to members of the House of Representatives.
The president’s border supplemental is an important first step to addressing the crisis. After funding the president’s request, we need to get busy ending catch and release, ensuring that parents and children are kept together in custody while their cases are pending, closing all loopholes in our broken asylum system, and ensuring unaccompanied illegal immigrant minors are quickly and safely returned home.
The American people will not tolerate the continued refusal by House Democrats to do their job, secure our border, fix our broken system, and end the border crisis that is harming Texans, illegal and legal immigrants, and undermining our national security. Neither will I.
