Rep. Roy’s statement on the passage of a continuing resolution that suspends the debt ceiling
WASHINGTON— Rep. Chip Roy (TX-21) issued the following statement after voting against Democrats’ continuing resolution:
After repeatedly ignoring calls to reconvene Congress over the summer and address the multiple crises the Biden administration has created, Speaker Pelosi’s first major move now that Congress is back in session is to advance a one-sided, destructive spending plan.
Last night, Democrats rammed through a measure to temporarily fund the government that contains billions in emergency appropriations and an irresponsible debt ceiling suspension. Passing a “continuing resolution” that contains new, unpaid-for spending is one of the many reasons why our nation is set to blow past $30 trillion in debt without a second thought. More importantly, suspending the debt ceiling without any budget reforms will allow Democrats to further weaponize government spending to fundamentally transform America without restraint.
The text of this nearly 100-page bill was released mere hours before Members were forced to vote on it. In fact, the sole revision Democrats made to the bill was stripping a provision to provide $1 billion to replenish Israel’s Iron Dome missile defense system after the anti-Israel wing of their party demanded it be removed.
Unlimited government spending is destroying our republic and we have a moral obligation to stop it.
